Di boxes blijven een essentieel onderdeel in het PA gebeuren. Ze zorgen dat ongebalanceerde signalen van bijvoorbeeld een gitaar, een synth gebalanceerd worden zodat deze met minder storing de mengtafel kunnen bereiken. Ook een eenvoudig stereosignaal (discobar) op een PA-tafel aansluiten is niet altijd even eenvoudig. Vaak heb je brom, vooral als je lange afstanden probeert te overbruggen. Ook PC's geven vaak een aardlusbrom die je met een di kunt wegwerken.

Passief: is meestal een gewone audio transfo, heeft geen extra voeding nodig.

Actief: moet gevoed worden met een batterij of via Phantom voeding. Meestal is dit een meer ingewikkelde electronische schakeling.
