What is streaming?
Unless you have an expensive subscription with offline storage (Beatport, Beatsource, SoundCloud), DJ streaming always requires a fast and stable internet connection.
Music streaming for DJs means you can instantly access a huge online library of millions of tracks via the internet and play them directly in your DJ software (such as Serato, rekordbox or VirtualDJ).
Direct Access
You don't need to pre-purchase, download, or save the music files. The track is streamed from a specialized streaming service's server.
This saves a huge amount of storage space and gives you access to virtually every song.
Streaming services
You're not using standard consumer services like Spotify (although some DJ software like Serato and Rekordbox have recently gained integrations again).
DJs use services specifically designed for DJ software, such as Beatport Streaming, Beatsource, TIDAL (with a DJ add-on), or SoundCloud Go+.
These services often offer higher sound quality and sometimes DJ-friendly versions of tracks (with extended intros/outtros).
Integration with DJ Software/Hardware
Your DJ software (or some standalone DJ players) has a built-in connection to the streaming service.
You log in, and the streaming service's entire catalog appears as a searchable "crate" in your software/hardware.
The software can analyze streamed tracks to determine BPM and key, and you can set cue points and loops, just like with your own files.
Streaming software or hardware?
The distinction between hardware and software streaming revolves around which device controls the streaming connection and the processing of the music.
Software Streaming
Software streaming uses the laptop/computer as the "brain." DJ software (such as Serato or rekordbox) connects to the online streaming service. The DJ controller, in this case, functions purely as a control panel for the music playing on the computer.
Hardware Streaming
Hardware Streaming uses standalone DJ players (e.g., Pioneer CDJ-3000 or Denon Prime, SClive4, Numark MixstreamPRO, etc.) that have built-in processors and Wi-Fi. The DJ equipment itself acts as the computer; it connects directly to the streaming service without the need for a laptop. This guarantees maximum stability and reliability during a set.
Streaming services
Tidal
TIDAL DJ streaming requires a TIDAL Individual HiFi subscription ($10.99/month) with the additional DJ Extension ($9.00/month), which works out to approximately €20 per month.
It works by linking your TIDAL account to compatible DJ applications such as rekordbox, Serato DJ Pro, Virtual DJ, and djay Pro. For standalone use, it's available on hardware running Engine OS (including the Denon DJ Prime series). You stream your music library directly into the software, where it is analyzed and mixed.
Apple Music
Apple Music DJ streaming works with a standard Apple Music Individual subscription (approximately €10.99 per month). Unlike other services, there is NO additional DJ add-on required; DJ rights are included.
The service connects your Apple Music library to compatible DJ applications such as Serato DJ Pro, Rekordbox, Engine DJ (for Denon DJ), and Algoriddim djay Pro. For standalone use, it's available directly on specific hardware supported by these platforms, such as the Denon DJ Prime series.
Beatport
Beatport Streaming offers a specialized subscription (usually Advanced, approximately $15.99 per month, or Professional for $29.99 per month) aimed directly at DJs in the electronic music scene.
The service connects the Beatport catalog (focused on house, techno, and related genres) to virtually all leading DJ applications such as rekordbox, Serato DJ Pro, Virtual DJ, and Traktor. It is also available for standalone use on hardware supported by Engine DJ (Denon DJ) and other compatible systems.
Soundcloud
SoundCloud Go+ DJ streaming works with the SoundCloud Go+ subscription (approximately €9.99 per month). This subscription provides access to the entire SoundCloud catalog of 320 million+ tracks, including remixes, bootlegs, and tracks from independent artists.
SoundCloud Go+ is the only service that allows offline storage of streamed tracks (up to 100 tracks) for use in DJ software. This is a benefit for DJs performing in challenging locations.
Beatsource
Beatsource Streaming offers a specialized subscription (usually Advanced, approximately $15.99 per month, or Professional for $29.99 per month) aimed directly at Open-Format and Mobile DJs.
The service connects the Beatsource library (focused on Hip-Hop, R&B, Latin, and Top 40) with leading DJ applications such as Serato DJ Pro, rekordbox, Virtual DJ, and djay Pro. It is also available for standalone use on hardware supported by Engine DJ (Denon DJ).
Spotify
Spotify DJ streaming works with a Spotify Premium subscription (starting at approximately €10.99 per month). The integration is included in the standard Premium plan; no additional DJ add-on is required.
The service connects Spotify's vast global catalog of 100 million+ tracks with leading DJ applications like rekordbox, Serato DJ Pro, and Algoriddim djay Pro.
