Epson EH-QB1000W Review
23-01-25
Color by Dejonge recently purchased the EH-QB1000W from our new QB-series laser projectors and they were kind enough to provide us with a review of them with their findings. These are high-end home cinema projectors that bring professional quality to your living room and create a high-quality home cinema in no time.
Dirk Dejonghe:
The new Epson laser projector is the fourth generation projector in our digital grading suite. The previous one was an Epson EH-TW9300 which was satisfactory but a bit too low in brightness, so we could only fill the screen to 70% to get the correct brightness.
After reading some reviews in the trade press, I asked for a demonstration of the new laser projector.
After installation I looked at the test cards with it and after about an hour of calibration and adjustment I came to an excellent result with the setting Natural, most parameters standard and the light output at 75%.
With this the different test cards are 100% compliant, the light intensity is measured with a calibrated device. At the same time the deepest blacks and the brightest whites must be visible without loss of detail.
As a colorist I am of course extremely critical because my work (color correction of feature films and others) will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people in the cinema or on streaming. As a post-production company we have to make sure that the image looks good not only with us, but also with colleagues who sometimes continue to work with our images for foreign versions
There were heated discussions among colorists a year or two ago about the new laser projectors that were installed in the theaters at that time. The colors that were seen in these theaters did not match at all what was made in the studios. Another manufacturer responded to this and made the necessary adjustments. We have the best relations with this manufacturer and have been given a laser projector from them on trial for a few weeks. However, their projector was much too bright for our small screen and we had to reduce the light level with gray filters, which is of course no solution.
With the arrival of the new Epson laser projector, we have found a high-performance yet affordable solution.
I can recommend the device to anyone looking for the highest quality in digital projection.
